Baltic spruce is one of the hardest softwoods available. This is due to the fact that trees grow slowly, being close to the Arctic Circle. The benefit of this is that the wood is very dense with small knots, making it an extremely good material for constructing cabins or chalets. The country of origin has an intensive forestry management programme to ensure a ready supply of what is their main resource.
